The Medieval village of Montescudaio

The village of Montescudaio rises still today within the remains of its ancient ring of walls. In Montescudaio the traces of its past are visible still today both in the stone-made paths and in the rural houses.

The ring of walls is still equipped with its ancient towers like the "Sighting Tower", from which it is possible to enjoy a wonderful sight of the valley of the Cecina river. This tower is characterized by a winding staircase.

On the main square of the village lies the "Saint Mary's Assumption Church", from where it is also possible to reach the "Civic Tower", being this latter nearby to the street called "Via del Borgo".

The building of the "Civic Tower" goes back to the XII-th century: in XIX-th century a watch was added to the tower. Once this tower gave access to a Medieval castle, of which it is possible to see just few remains close to the ancient walls whose height in some parts exceeds fifteen metres.
