The Farinata degli Uberti Square in Empoli The Farinata degli Uberti Square comes from Farinata's name, Manente degli Uberti's name, a Ghibelline nobleman belonging to an ancient and important Florentine family. The Farinata degli Uberti Square is the historical central square of the ancient urban centre, today named also Piazza dei Leoni (Square of the Lions) because it is embellished by four lying down lions surrounding the marble-made fountain placed in the centre of the square.

The fountain, beared by the famous Naiadi, was wanted by Luigi Pampaloni in 1828. The Farinata degli Uberti Square is surrounded by great porchs dating to different ages and it is dominated by the facade of the Collegiata di Sant'Andrea (Saint Andrew Church) rising on the end of a large flight of steps. Next to Farinata degli Uberti Square there are the Palazzo Pretorio (Praetorian Palace) and, in the opposite side, the Palazzo Ghibellino (Ghibelline Palace).
