The Abbey of San Godenzo

The Abbey of San Godenzo rises on the "Dante Alighieri" Square, on the top of a large staircase. It was founded in 1029 by the Bishop Jacopo the Bavaro and then restored and consacred in 1070.

The interior shows its original aspect thanks to some recent restoration works according to three aisles divided by square pillars.

Once entered to the Abbey of San Godenzo it is possible to admire on the left an "Annunciation" by Franciabigio (1484-1525), whereas, on the right, a fine sixteenth-century pulpit.

The presbitery consists of three raised apses, held by six columns showing some ancient capitals.

In the middle apse it is possible to admire a fine mosaic portraying an "Our Lady's Crowning and Saints", in which also "Dante, Beatrice and Petrarca" appear, made by Giuseppe Cassioli (1865-1942), whereas in the lefty apse there is a wooden statued by Baccio da Montelupo (1469-1535).

Close to the main altar it is also possible to admire a fine polyptych portraying an "Our Lady and Saints", attributed to Bernardo Daddi (1290-1348).
