The Cathedral of Grosseto

The cathedral was erected between 1294 and 1302 in Saint Lorenzo honour, on a pre-existing church.

It was projected by the architect Sozzo di Rustichino and during next centuries was restored many times.

The facade of the Cathedral is characterized by bichrome bands, whereas the lateral portal on the rigth presents any decorative patterns.

Outside stands out the belfry made of earthenware in 1402.

The interior of the Cathedral is on the plan of a latin cross with three aisles divided by pillars.

The baptisimal font was made in XV-th century by Antonio Ghini who also made the altar of the Madonna della Grazie placed on the left transept.

In the middle aisle it is possible to admire a font made in 1506 by a sculptor from Siena.

In the right aisle there are two wonderful windows portraying several saints.

Inside the Cathedral it is also possible to visit a chapel that preserves inside an ancient wooden crucifix.
