Tourism in Isola del Giglio

Giglio Castello

The urban settlement of Giglio Castello is a suggestive resort, rich of a particular medieval charm.

Erected by the Pisans during the twelfth century, it was enlarged and restored many times under the domination of the Tuscan Grand Dukedom.

The village is still surrounded by its ancient medieval walls, periodically intervalled by cylindric tower.

The houses made of rock rise through tight street surmonted by archs and steep flight of steps, like if they formed a labyrinth.

The fourteenth-century Pisan Tower soars up imposing itself over the urban centre.

Particularly interesting is also the fourteenth-century parish of Saint Peter Apostolo, placed in the middle of the village, in which interior place is the Innocenzo III's private chapel where it is possible to admire an ancient ivory-made crucifix attributed to Giambologna (1529-1608).
