Viareggio (ZIP code 55049) is 32,9 kilometers far from Lucca, that is the Chief Town of the homonymous province to whom the municipality belongs.

Viareggio has a population of 58.180 inhabitants (Viareggini) and a surface of 31,88 square kilometers thus showing a population density of 1.824,97 inhabitants per square kilometer. It rises 2 metres above the sea level.

Population: The municipality of Viareggio had a popolation of 57.514 inhabitants accordingly to the results of the national census made in 1991. After the national census made in 2001 the population was 58.180 inhabitants, thus showing during the years 1991 - 2001 a percentual variation of 1,16% inhabitants.

The inhabitants are distributed in 24.541 families with an average of 2,37 people per family.

The altimetric spawn is thus of 4 metres.

Work and workers:There are 449 industrial firms employing 3.026 people that are the 12,93% of the total of the workers. There are 2.580 service firms employing 5.733 people that are the 24,50% of the total of the workers. There are also 2.909 firms employing 10.864 people that are the 46,43% of the total of the workers. There are also 314 administrative offices emplying 3.775 workers that are the 16,13% of the total of the workers.

There is a total of 23.398 workers, that are the 40,22% of the inhabitants of the municipality.

Viareggio rises along the coast of Versilia between the south canal of Burlamacca and the north ditch of Camaiore.

Viareggio is a productive industrial and artisan centre, well known in the dockyard field. Besides of the dockyard activity, citizens develop also the fishing and flower growing activity.

Since XII-th century Viareggio was contended for long by Pisans and people from Lucca for its strategic position on the sea.

The place name comes from the Latin "via regis" that is the name of the road built, during the Middle Ages, along the close coast.

In 1117 people from Genoa and Lucca joined their forces against Pisa achieving to take possession of Viareggio and then they built a fortress in order to control and defend the import-export trade in that area.

The fortress was called "Castrum de Via Regia" because it was built at the end of the road that linked the fortress to the hinterland. Around the fortress developed the town that later got a great importance. Then Lucca was alone in controlling of Viareggio.

In the half of 1400 started the first attempts of reclamation of the territory in order to promote urban and population increase and to increase the sea traffic.

In the first years of 1500 Viareggio was fortified by Lucca after political events tnat envolved both Pisa and Genoa.

At the beginning of 1600 Viareggio was a largely populated town and in 1617 it became main town of the Vicaria along the coast comprising the settlements rose on the surrounding hills.

In 1701 Viareggio became a common of the Republic of Lucca.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the town increased under the Bourbon domination: Maria Luisa of Borbone, sovereign of Lucca, declared Viareggio an official town and she started the works for setting of the urban and harbor plan.

In 1828 started the building of the first wooden bathing facilities in order to satisfy the increasing practice of the sea baths.

In 1861 Viareggio was added to the Reign of Italy by a general vote.

Among the most interesting monuments to see in Viareggio we point out here the Villa Paolina (Paolina Villa), the Villa dei Borbone (Borbone Villa), the Supercinema (Supertheatre), the chalet Martini (Martini Cottage), the Galleria del Libro (Gallery of the Book) and the Villa Giacomo Puccini (Giacomo Puccini Villa).

Among the several celebrations taking place in Viareggio we point out the famous Carnival worldwide known. The allegorical procession that join different traditions and cultures takes place on all febrary long with night and day shows and local celebrations.
