Tourism in Vernio

The Medieval village of Vernio

The village of Vernio is perched among the green hills extending along the valley of the Bisenzio river, being also crossed by this latter. Its territory is rich of suggestive examples of Medieval buildings. Among them the so called "Casone" distinguishes for being one of the most important Medieval buildings of the town.

The "Casone" is an elegant noble palace that once hosted the Bardi's family whereas today it is the seat of the Municipal offices. The interiors, showing a sixteenth-century style, save numerous fine paintings.

The Saint Mary Abbey is one of the oldest buildings of the territory, being already quoted in some official documents dating back to the XI-th century. It saves still today the typical features of its original building and inside it is possible to admire fine frescoes, like the cycle of frescoes visible along the right aisle and portraying a "Nativity", an "Annunciation" and an "Archangel Michael".

Very interesting to visit is also the Saint Ippolite and Cassiano Parish, one of the most important religious buildings of the territory, built during the XII-th century. The interior, in Romanic style, has just an aisle and it is enriched with fine art works, among them a plate portraying a "Deposition", painted by Giovanni Bizzelli (1556-1612). Close to the parish there is the Canonica, that saves a "Shepherds' Adoration", painted by Girolamo Ristori (1450-1512).
