San Rocco Larciano

The place name probably comes from the Latin proper name of person "Larcius", to which the suffix "-anus" was added to indicate "belonging".

The birth of the village of Larciano occurred around the X-th century, when a castle was built on the territory and subdued to the jurisdiction of the Guidi's Counts.

The community of Larciano gathered around the castle, starting to build its houses and develop its economic activities.

Owing to its strategic position along the western side of the Albano mount, the village was bought by the city of Pistoia that fortified it so that the village became a defensive fortress of the domains of Pistoia.

At the beginning of the XIV-th century the village subdued numerous sieges by the Florentines belonging to the political faction of the Guelphs (Papacy's supporters), who were struggling against the Ghibellines from Pistoia (Empire's supporters).

At the end of the same century the conflicts between the two cities of Pistoia and Florence settled down and thus the village started to enjoy a political stability that consolidated when Larciano entered the domains of the Republic of Florence, under the government of the Medici's Grand Dukes.
