Back to the town of Castiglione d`Orcia

Tourism in Castiglione d`Orcia

The Medieval village of Castiglione d'Orcia

The village of Castiglione d'Orcia saves still today numerous typical architectures dating back to the Middle Ages.

Among them distinguishes the Fortress of Tentennano, placed on a hill dominationg the Orcia valley. In the opposite rises the Aldobrandeschi's Fortress, saving its original aspect.

In the very heart of the historic centre rises the square entitled to the Vecchietta, being this latter the nickname of the painter Lorenzo di Pietro (1410-1480).

The square shows a stone and brick made paving and in the middle there is a tank dating back to the XVII-th century.

Interesting is also the Saint Stephen and Degna Church, that probably is the most important religious building of the town. The church was built during the Middle Ages and still today shows its original aspect.

Inside the religious building it is possible to admire a painting attributed to Giovanni di Bartolomeo (XV - XVI-th century) portraying an "Our Lady on the Throne and the Saints Stephen, Macario, Sebastiane and Rocco" and another one painted by Fabrizio Boschi (1572-1642), portraying a "Crucifixion with the Sorrowfuls and the Saints Mary Magdalene, Francis and Anthony from Padua".
