Back to the town of Rapolano Terme

Tourism in Rapolano Terme

The Medieval village of Rapolano Terme

The village of Rapolano Terme still saves today the typical aspect of its original building. Of its ancient Medieval fortifications it is still possible to admire one of the gates once gave the access to the town, the so called "Porta Tintori", from which it is also possible to see the remains of the ancient walls and two circular fortresses.

In the heart of the historic centre rise three ancient religious buildings: the Fraternity Church, the Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish Church and the Saint Bartolomeo Church.

The interiors of the Fraternity Church are rich of sixteenth-century frescoes, like an "Our Lady with the Child and the Saints John Baptist and Gerolamo" painted by Girolamo di Benvenuto (1470-1524).

Inside the church is also possible to admire a fine painting by Ventura Salimbeni (1567-1613) portraying "Our Lady with the Rosary's Mysteries" and a polyptych by Luca di Tommè (1330-1390).

The other two churches are also rich of paitings: inside the fourteenth-century Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish Church it is possible to admire an "Our Lady of the Milk" painted by Paolo di Giovanni Fei (1345-1411); the Saint Bartolomeo Church saves an "Our Lady with the Child and Saints" and a fine stucco in naif style dating back to the XVI-th century.

Very interesting are also the thermal baths of Rapolano Terme: the "Saint John Baptist Thermal Baths" and the "Ancient Oaklet Thermal Baths", whose insides it is possible to take baths, inhalations and mud baths. Both baths are alimentated by water springs rich of sulphur, bicarbonate and calcium, whose temperature rises between 39°C and 40 °C.
