Tourism in Laterina

The Medieval village of Laterina

The village of Laterina still shows today its ancient urban structure formed along the Middle Ages. Inside its ancient walls rises the historic centre, consisting of three parallel roads.

At the extremity of the two side roads there are the Fortress and the Giunigi Tower, both saving the untouched typical features of its original building.

Along the ancient ring of walls it is also possible to see one of the gates that once allowed to enter to the village: the so named "Cold Gate", also called "Ghianderino's Gate".

In the very heart of the village of Laterina rises also the Saints Ippolito and Cassiano Church, whose name comes from an ancient parish that once rose outside the walls. Just some traces of a mosaic saves of the ancient parish, along a side of the Saints Ippolito and Cassiano Church.

Inside the religious building it is possible to admire a painting portraying an "Our Lady", coming from the workshop of Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530).

Among the other interesting Medieval buildings to see there is also the Saint Rocco Oratory, built during the XVI-th century, that today hosts several cultural events.
