Tourism in Marciano della Chiana

The Medieval village of Marciano della Chiana

The village of Marciano della Chiana is still today within the remains of its ancient ring of walls, close to the ancient fortress, built by the city of Siena, whose internal structure shows numerous underground passages that once allowed the access to the fortress as well as the main gate.

Among the religious buildings that rise in the territory of Marciano della Chiana, the Saints Michael Archangel and Lucy Church is probably the oldest one.

Its building goes back to the Early Middle Ages and today it shows its original aspect thanks to the numerous restoration works executed along the centuries.

Interesting to visit it is also the Saint Victoria Temple, built at the end of the XVI-th century by the architect Bartolomeo Ammannati (1511-1592) for the will of Cosimo I of Medici, in honour of the Florentine fallen in battle.

The Saint Victoria Temple is finely ornated of serene stone-made decorations and surmounted by a covered by lead dome: inside it is possible to admire a plate dating back to the XVI-th century and portraying a "Saint Victoria and Angels".
