The place name probably comes from the word "cinigia", Italian literal translation of the Latin "cinisia" with the meaning of "ash" with probable reference to the color of its soil.
The foundation of the village of Cinigiano occurred during the Middle Ages under the jurisidction of some powerful vassals of the Aldobrandeschi's Counts belonging to the Santa Fiora branch.
In the middle of the XIII-th century the Aldobrandeschi's Counts put all their domains under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Siena, declaring their loyality to this latter but often violating their oath.
At the end of the same century Siena expelled the Lords of Cinigiano from their government but it was not able to give stability to the village because of the intervention in the quarrel of some powerful feudal families.
During the next years Cinigiano was governed first by the Guidi's Counts of Poppi and then by the Guidi's Counts of Battifolle.
At the end of the XIV-th century Siena bought the village from the Count Francesco di Ugone of Battifolle, who continued to interfere to the local policy breaking the pact previously made with the Republic of Siena.
At the beginning of the next century the community of Cinigiano organized a rebellion against the Count Francesco di Ugone of Battifolle and consigned the village to the Republic of Siena that annexed it to its own domains.
In the middle of the XV-th century Siena subdued a heavy defeat by the Florentine army and it lost all its domains that the Republic of Florence annexed to its ones.
From then Cinigiano entered the orbit of Florence, passing first under the domination of the Medici's Grand Dukes and then under the domination of the Lorena's Dukes, who came to the power at the beginning of the XVIII-th century and in 1776 they assigned the village of Cinigiano to the town of Grosseto. This latter held Cinigiano even after the Unity of Italy occurred on 1861 by the action of the King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia.
Among the most important monuments to see in Cinigiano we point out here the Parrocchiale di San Michele Arcangelo (Saint Michael Archangel Parish), the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Nevi (Saint Mary of the Snows Church) and the remains of the Medieval fortifications.
Among the numerous celebrations periodically taking place in Cinigiano we remind here the traditional "Grape Feast" held yearly on the beginning of October and during which it is possible to attend some folkloristic shows, to visit the local wineries and also to taste the fine D.O.C. Montecucco wine, produced in Cinigiano.
