The Saint Leopold Church in Follonica

The Saint Leopold Church was commitioned around 1835 by the Grand Duke Leopold II to the architect Carlo Reishammer (1834-1940).

The Saint Leopold Church, built in partnership with the architect Alessandro Manetti (1667-1749) between 1836 and 1838 and consecrated in 1838, is one of the most important artistic works iron based.

The church, on the plan of a latin cross, shows neoclassical features and presents original ornaments and interior decorations cast iron made such as the pronaus, the crowning to belfry, the apse and the front rose ornament.

The interior is embellished with elegant decorations and manufactured cast iron.

Particularly interesting are two bas-relieves made by the sculptor Lorenzo Nencini (1806-1847) portraying Saint Leopold ditributing gifts to the poor and a statue of marble of Saint John Baptist placed on the christening font modelled by the Nencini himself.
