The Medieval village of Pitigliano

The village of Pitigliano was built during the XIV-th century, so it has a typical Medieval aspect but also showing some important buildings erected in the Reinassance Age like the Saint Mary Church, in whose underground an ancient necropolis recently came to light.

The characteristic of the Medieval village of Pitigliano can be seen both in the residential buldings and castles that were built on the edge of steep tufaceous walls of the Volsini mountains.

The historic centre developed through three main roads joined together by a close network of paths.

The residential buildings show Medieval feautures and decorations, noble ensigns and windows in travertine-made frames.

Among the several interesting buildings, the most remarkable one is the Orsini's Fortress, that is a fortified building equipped with towers and bastions. The fortress was built by the Aldobrandeschi's family and then it was restored by the Orsini's one. The Orsini's Fortress shows its original feautures even today.

Very interesting is also the Orsini Palace, built by the Aldobrandeschi's family and then restored between the XV-th and XVI-th centuries. The palace combines both Medieval elements and typical Reinassance features. Today it is seat of the Diocese of Pitigliano.
