The Medieval fortifications of Scarlino

By the village of Scarlino rises the Fortress, in a high position dominating both the below plane and the coast extending from Piombino to Punta Ala.

The fortress has an irregular shape similar to a rectangle. It is joined to the ancient walls, whose remains today are still visible.

Of the Medieval fortifications, today also remains the Porta Senese (Senese Gate) and two circular towers, placed on the highest position of Scarlino.

The fortified structure, that opens to the coast, still has its high walls and towers: the Sighting Tower on the south-eastern side and another tower on the south-western side, both equipped by loopholes.

During recent archaelogical excavations in the area of Scarlino an ancient tank and a little treasury consisting of one hundred gold coins were came to light, both dating back to the XV-th century. The tank was used to pick the rain waters up.

In the place of the ditch once surrounding the fortified structure, was built a platform hosting, especially in the summer season, several musical and theatre shows in a suggestive environment evoking Medieval atmospheres.
