The Medieval village of Castiglione di Garfagnana

The village of Castiglione di Garfagnana is still today surrounded by its fourteenth-century ring of walls equipped with towers. On the walls opens the only gate that once gave access to the town by a drawbridge.

Of its Medieval fortifications it is also possible to admire today the Fortress, whose around the village develops. It shows its ancient ring of walls equipped with loopholes and three towers.

Inside the village of Castiglione di Garfagnana it is possible to visit two interesting religious buildings: the Saint Michael Church and the Saint Peter Church.

The Saint Peter Church is probably the most ancient religious building of the town, being this latter built during the XIII-th century. The church saves a policrome wood-made painted plate portraying Biblical pictures and some statues made by Matteo Civitali (1436-1502).

The Saint Michael Church, whose building goes back to the XV-th century, shows a rich facade of Late Gothich ornaments and inside it saves a fine fourteenth-century plate portaying an "Our Lady with the Child", painted by Giuliano di Simone, and a fine wood-made Crucifix.
