Minucciano (ZIP code 55034) is 128,7 kilometers far from Lucca, that is the Chief Town of the homonymous province to whom the municipality belongs.
Minucciano has a population of 2.521 inhabitants (Minuccianesi) and a surface of 57,04 square kilometers thus showing a population density of 44,20 inhabitants per square kilometer. It rises 697 metres above the sea level.

Population: The municipality of Minucciano had a popolation of 2.678 inhabitants accordingly to the results of the national census made in 1991. After the national census made in 2001 the population was 2.521 inhabitants, thus showing during the years 1991 - 2001 a percentual variation of -5,86% inhabitants.
The inhabitants are distributed in 1.081 families with an average of 2,33 people per family.
The place: The territory of the municipality lies between 335 and 1.946 metres above sea level.
The altimetric spawn is thus of 1.611 metres.
Work and workers:There are 38 industrial firms employing 167 people that are the 38,66% of the total of the workers. There are 56 service firms employing 74 people that are the 17,13% of the total of the workers. There are also 46 firms employing 118 people that are the 27,31% of the total of the workers. There are also 18 administrative offices emplying 73 workers that are the 16,90% of the total of the workers.
There is a total of 432 workers, that are the 17,14% of the inhabitants of the municipality.
Minucciano rises along the high basin of the Serchio river in the Garfagnana area.
The local economy is mainly based on the production of cereals, vegetables, fruits, vine grape and on the industrial marble mining and processing activity. Tourism is also remarkable in the local economy, thanks both to the beauty of the places and to the presence of numerous and fine hotels.
The place name probably comes from the Latin proper name of person "Minucius", to which the siffix "-anus" was added to indicate "belonging".
The first settlements in the territory of Minucciano were founded by the Ligurian Apuani, who were chased away by the Romans: this latter founded a "castrum" (fortified place) on a pre-existing settlement.
After the collapes of the Roman Empire, the territory was submitted first by the Goths, then by the Franks and finally by the Longbards. Finally due to the Barbaric invasions the whole area depopulated.

The actual village of Minucciano consolidated during the Early Middle Ages, as a feud of the Malaspina's family, who dominated up to the XI-th century.
At that time the village entered the domains of the Republic of Lucca, under whose domination Minucciano experienced a period of economic prosperity so to get the right to coin its own money, also becoming one of the most important villages of the surrounding.
Due to its strategic position, along the boudary between the Garfagnana and Lunigiana area, the village of Minucciano was quarrelled for a long among Pisa, Florence, the Visconti's family from Milan and the Estensi's family from Ferrara.
Along the next centuries the cities quarrelling Minucciano alternated to the power: first the Republic of Pisa, then that one of Florence, governed this latter for a short period, and the Visconti, who lost the village that passed to Lucca.
Later the village of Minucciano was conquered again by the Malaspina family, who were allied with the Estensi family. This latter dominated for a short time up to 1447, when the village was annexed to the domains of the Republic of Lucca.
Entered definitely the orbit of the Republic of Lucca, Minucciano was elevated to the ank of Vicarship and from then it followed the chances of Lucca until 1861, when both of them were annexed to the Reign of Italy by the King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia.
Among the most important monuments to see in Minucciano we point out here the Pieve di San Lorenzo (Saint Lorenz Parish), the Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso (Our Lady of the Aid Sanctuary) and the Palazzo Baldini (Baldini Palace).
Among the several celebrations periodically taking place in Minucciano we remind the traditional "Palio dei Natalecci" (a competition) held yearly during the Christmas Holidays and consisting of a competition among the close localities for the building a tower by only using branches and shrubs. The village that makes the most beautiful tower, will receive a prize and at the end of all the celebrations the tower will be burnt.
