Vergemoli rises in the Garfagnana area, along the valley of the Turrite di Gallicano torrent.
The local economy is mainly based on the production of cereals, fodders, potatoes, chestnuts and on the breeding of ovines.
The place name probably comes from the proper name of person "Virgemulo", to which the doble genitive case "Veri" or "Viri" was associated.
The foundation of the village of Vergemoli occurred during the Early Middle Ages and along the next centuries it consolidated up to take its actual aspect.
The first historical data about the existence of the village go back to the X-th century. The village is quoted in an official document with the name of "Vallis Gemini", name indicating its particular geographical position, placed between two valleys.
Since the beginning Vergemoli was dominated by some noble families who were under the direct influence of the powerful city of Lucca. Up to the XV-th century the village had to subdue both the alternating of the powerful feudal lordships and the conflicts existing among the cities of Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Modena.
The community of Vergemoli raised its economic chances and found again its political stability just when the Estensi's family from Ferrara intervend to pacify the whole Garfagnana area and annexed some territories like that one of Vergemoli to the Dukedom of Modena.
The Estensi established a peaceful atmosphere that allowed the community of Vergemoli to develop its economy, mainly based on agriculture.
At the beginning of the XVII-th century the Estensi started a series of works for the restoration of the town and for the modernization of the ancient fortifications.
At the beginning of the XIX-th century the Estensi's domination was interrupted by the invasion of the territory operated by the Napoleonic troops that occupied the territory until 1814, when Vergemoli came back to the Estensi's family again.
In 1861 Vergemoli was annexed to the Reign of Italy by the King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia.
