The Saint John Baptist Cathedral in Buti

The date of building of the Cathedral, entitled to Saint John Baptist, is unknown but it is supposed that the religious building already existed in the X-th century.

The Cathedral was the most important religious building in Buti and other eight churches depended from it.

Just few traces of the ancient Romanic building are visible today. The building was rebuilt at the beginning of the XVII-th century in Baroque style by Flaminio Guerrazzi and at the beginning of the XX-th century the Cathedral was restored and enlarged according to the design of the architect Giuseppe Castellucci.

The interiors of the Saint John Baptist Cathedral are rich of fine paintings by different Tuscan artists like those ones painted in XVIII-th century by Piero Confortini, portraying an "Annunciation", the "Multiplication of the Fishes" and "Our Lady with the Child and Saints".

Very interesting are also the two paintings painted in XIX-th century by Annibale Marianini (1814-1863) portraying "Saint Vincenzo de Paoli " and "Our Lady".

The baptismal font and the main altar are both Carrara’s marble-made.

Nearby the main altar are placed an earthenware-made fount and a fine wooden crucifix made with stucco and pasteboard during the XVI-th century.
