The Saint Domenico Church in San Miniato

The Saint Domenico Church, first entitled to the Saints Jacopo and Lucia, was built at the beginning of XII-th century and in 1300 it was restored.

Along the right side of the church there is a cloister that today hosts the Municipal Library.

The interior of the Saint Domenico Church shows an only aisle and it is rich of frescoes portraying pictures about Saint Domenico’s life.

The lateral altars are surmounted by suggestive paintings as that one by Francesco Curradi (1570-1661) portraying "Our Lady with the Child and Saints" and the other one painted by Ranieri del Pace portraying "Our Lady with the Child and Saint Pio V".

Inside the church are placed several side chapels. During the XVIII-th century some of them were closed but for the Cappella dei Samminiati (Samminiati’s Chapel), the Cappella degli Armaleoni (Armaleonti’s Chapel), the Cappella degli Spedalinghi (Spedalinghi’s Chapel) and the Cappella Borromei (Borromei Chapel).

Inside the first chapel (Samminiati’s Chapel) it is possible to admire several wonderful works as "Our Lady with the Child and Four Saints" and the marble-made sepulcher of the famous Florentine physician Giovanni Chellini built by Bernardo Rossellino (1409-1464).

The second chapel (Armaleonti’s Chapel) shows several frescoes painted by several Florentine artists and a plate by Mariotto di Nardo portraying five pictures about Saint John Baptist.

The third chapel (Spedalinghi’s Chapel), painted of Saint John Main’s stories, saves a plate by Poppi portraying the "Deposition" and another paint by Giovanni della Robbia (14669-1529).

Finally the last chapel (Borromei Chapel) shows some remains of fourteenth-century frescoes.
