Abetone was for long the favorite place of those needing to hide themselves by finding a perfect hiding-place among the thick woods.

The place name comes from a gigantic fir-tree that, in eighteenth century, was felled to allow the building of a road that linked the region Tuscany with the city of Modena. Before the town was called Boscolungo, being today this name attributed to a district of Abetone.

In 1732 the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo, according to the Duke of Modena Francesco III, started a series of works to build a road that first joined Pistoia and Capostrada.

A residential settlement populated by peasants was formed by opening of the so called "Via Regia Modenese". Then the first factories and inns rose and gave a great impulse to the urban economy.

In the meanwhile were erected two stone-made pyramids with marble-made decorations, that marked the boundary between the Grand Dukedom of Tuscany and the Dukedom of Modena. Today is still possible to see on those pyramids the names of the Dukes who promoted that project.

During the domination of the Grand Dukedom of Tuscany was built the Saint Leopold Church in the honor of the Grand Duke of Tuscany who was the promoter of the building of the road that played a big role in the development of the economy of Abetone that continued to grow until the Unity of Italy occurred on 1861 for the will of the King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia.

Among the most important monuments to see in Abetone we point out here the Chiesa di San Leopoldo (Saint Leopold Church), the Piramidi (Pyramids) and the Ponte sul Sestaione (Bridge on the Sestaione river).
