The Holiest Crucifix Basilica in Buggiano

The Holiest Crucifix Basilica was built between the XIII-th and XIV-th century and in the beginning it was entitled to Saint Peter Apostle. The religious building got only recently its actual denomination.

On its facade it is possible to admire an ensign portraying the commons of Buggiano, Montecatini, Monsummano and Montevettolini and quoting the year 1492, when the allied commons of the Valdinievole defeated the other ones of the Valdarno.

The interior of the Holiest Crucifix Basilica has just an aisle and shows a fine Baroque style. Along the internal walls it is possible to admire some stuccoes painted in 1875 by the Bernardini's brothers from Pescia and, on the internal facade, an ancient organ.

Along the right walls there are four fine paintings portraying the "Saint Peter's Miracles" by fra' Felice da Sambuca (1734-1805), an "Our Lady on the Throne and Saints" by Paolino da Pistoia, a "Saint Catherine and other Saints" and an "Our Lady and the Saints Domenico and Francis".

Along the left side it is possible to admire other fine paintings like an "Our Lady with the Child" by Giacomo Tais and a "Saint Agata's Martyrdom", coming this latter from some Michelangelo's student.

Close to the main altar it is possible to admire a little marble-made temple, whose inside there are a fine wooden Crucifix dating back to the XIV-th century and two wooden statues dating back to the XV-th century and portraying an "Our Lady" and a "Saint John".

From the right transept it is also possible to enter in a little museum, in which it is possible to admire some valuable religious vestments and ornaments.
