Montale (ZIP code 51037) is 9,6 kilometers far from Pistoia, that is the Chief Town of the homonymous province to whom the municipality belongs.

Montale has a population of 10.133 inhabitants (Montalesi) and a surface of 32,02 square kilometers thus showing a population density of 316,46 inhabitants per square kilometer. It rises 85 metres above the sea level.

Population: The municipality of Montale had a popolation of 9.807 inhabitants accordingly to the results of the national census made in 1991. After the national census made in 2001 the population was 10.133 inhabitants, thus showing during the years 1991 - 2001 a percentual variation of 3,32% inhabitants.

The inhabitants are distributed in 3.480 families with an average of 2,91 people per family.

The place: The territory of the municipality lies between 43 and 1.042 metres above sea level.

The altimetric spawn is thus of 999 metres.

Work and workers:There are 578 industrial firms employing 2.697 people that are the 65,64% of the total of the workers. There are 201 service firms employing 556 people that are the 13,53% of the total of the workers. There are also 196 firms employing 634 people that are the 15,43% of the total of the workers. There are also 46 administrative offices emplying 222 workers that are the 5,40% of the total of the workers.

There is a total of 4.109 workers, that are the 40,55% of the inhabitants of the municipality.

Montale rises along the low valley of the Agna torrent.

The local economy is mainly based on the production of cereals, vegetables, fruits, vine grape, olives and on the activity of numerous textile and furniture industries.

The place name comes from the word "monte" (mount), with reference to the high position where the town rises.

The village of Montale was founded by the city of Pistoia as a fortified place in order to contrast the power of the Guidi's Counts in the territory. They previously settled down in the close locality of Montemurlo and from there moved to conquered new territories.

During the next centuries the village of Montale passed first to the jurisdiction of the Cancellieri's Lordship and then it was conquered by the Republic of Florence that started its policy of territorial expansion.

After a long siege of the castle of Montale operated by the Florentines, the village was conquered by Florence that started to rebuild the fortifications.

At that time another settlement formed around that prevoius one and put itself under the protection of the Republic of Florence. The two villages were first united and then elevated to the rank of Podestà's seat of the Florentine countryside.

During the XV-th century the whole area experienced a period of civic wars involving the all villages of the surrounding that had to choose which family to support between the Panciatichi's family and the Cancellieri's one.

The belligerant atmosphere lasted for a long endind just in the next century by coming the Medici's Grand Dukes to the power, who pacified the territory by an armed intervention.

Montale

At the beginning of the XVIII-th century, by dieing the Medici's last direct descendant, the Lorena's Dukes came to the power. In 1775 they elevated the village of Montale to the rank of autonomous common.

The Lorena's domination lasted almost uninterruptedly until 1861, when occurred the Unity of Italy by the action of the King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia.

Among the most important monuments to see in Montale we point out here the Pieve di San Giovanni Evangelista (Saint Evangelist Parish), the Abbazia di San Salvatore (Saint Salvatore Abbey), the Parrocchiale di Montale (Parish Church of Montale) and the remains of the Castle.

Among the numerous celebrations periodically taking place in Montale we remind the "Tournment of the Quarters" held yearly on July and during which a soccer tournment takes place involving the four quarters in which the town is divided and also other close localities. The sport competitions are accompanied by some entertainment shows.
