The Medieval village of Castellina in Chianti

The town of Castellina in Chianti today still saves the characteristic Medieval features of its Medieval buildings visible in the rural houses, in the stone-made paths and in its ancient fortifications.

The village is almost surrounded by its ancient ring of walls, showing an irregular hexagonal shape, that was erected during the XV-th century by the city of Florence.

The ring of walls is still spaced out by numerous square towers and crowned by an imposing rectangular fortress, that is the highest part of a castle. Of the ancient gates that once gave access to the town, one of them was rebuilt in its original form.

Very interesting is the fortress placed on the highest part of the town, whose building shows its original features. It is formed by two rectangular buildings and it is surrounded by its ancient steep walls.
Today the fortress hosts the municipal offices.
