Tourism in Gaiole in Chianti

The Medieval village of Gaiole in Chianti

The village of Gaiole in Chianti is surrounded by a hilly area covered by vineyards and a rich wood vegetation.

Today it is possible to admire numerous examples of military architecture in the ancient fortifications like those of the close village of Vertine, saving still today its castle placed within the remains of its ancient ring of walls and also a fortress at the entrance of the village.

Another fortified building is the Saint Mary Church in Spaltenna, whose Romanic building goes back to the XII-th century. It is equipped with a bell tower.

Close to Gaiole in Chianti there are two other castles: the Brolio Castle and the Metello Castle.

The Brolio Castle was built during the Early Middle Ages and it belonged to the Ricasoli's family that made it transformed into a noble residence, also equipped with a "Romantic garden" where it is possible to admire different botanical species.

Also the Metello Castle belonged to the Ricasoli's family that, in the XVIII-th century, made it transformed into a villa. The castle was built on a quadrilateral plant with a middle tower, whose inside it is possible to admire some original interior decorations, like a little theatre equipped with seven ancient sceneries.
