Tourism in Montalcino

The Fortress of Montalcino

The Fortress was built in 1361 by Mino Foresi and Domenico di Feo on a hill dominating the territory of Montalcino.

It shows a irregular pentagonal shape, whose ring of walls is fortified by some cornered towers erected to control the gates.

In 1559 was also added on the south-western side of the Fortress an outcrop.

On the main gate it is possible to see the ancient ensign of the city of Siena and through that gate it is possible to go into a large garden, that hosts several shows in summer season.

On the left side there are the remains of an ancient basilica as well as an aisle and traces of some forteenth-century frescoes.

At the bottom rises the building of a castle that today hosts a local wine cellar on its ground floor.

It is also possibile to admire the landscape by the rooms on the higher floors and also to go and visit the ancient towers.
