The Medieval village of Monteriggioni The still today intact Medieval village of Monteriggioni is surrounded by the ancient ring of walls erected during the XIII-th century. The walls extend circularly for a 570 metres strengthen and they are spaced out by fourteen towers and two gates, the "Porta Franca" one that opens in the south-eastern direction towards Siena and the "Porta di San Giovanni" one that opens in the north-western direction towards Florence. The circular Castle of Monteriggioni, in a perfect state of conservation, rises in the middle of the village, imposing on the surrounding landscape.

The village developed around a parish placed on the heart of the historic centre of Monteriggioni and that saves today the ancient Romanic and Gothic features. Monteriggioni is considered as one of the oldest and remarkable Medieval villages and it had such a fame that the famous poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) wrote in his Divine Comedy about a "circular ring of walls" in Monteriggioni (Hell, XXXI). There are also numerous legends about Monteriggioni telling about underground passages that once joined the village of Monteriggioni to the city of Siena.
